A small brand is not a simple brand

Vitor Devechiati·3 min read

Alaya comes from the Sanskrit ālaya: home, dwelling, shelter. It is the name of a botanical body care brand made by hand in the Northern Rivers, in northern New South Wales. Oils, masks, moisturisers. One small batch at a time.

When I started working with Alaya, the brand did not hold the key to its own house.

That is not a figure of speech. The site was live and running, but access to it lived with people who had already left. An outdated version of the shop left a known security hole open. The page took eight seconds to open on a phone. And the most expensive item on the list: there was not one written line defining what the brand was, who it spoke to, or how it spoke. All of it lived in the founder’s head.

That is not carelessness on her part. It is the pattern. A small brand hires someone for the website, then someone for Instagram, then someone for the photos, and each one walks away holding a piece of the understanding. In the end nobody has the whole brand. Not even her.

So the first thing I delivered was not a logo. It was the key.

I recovered access to the site, closed the hole, cleared out what was installed and unused, and brought load time from eight seconds to under four. Then I set up the path for the hosting and the domain to sit in her name rather than a supplier’s. None of that is visible to a customer. It is the kind of work you only notice when it has not been done.

With the house in her hands, we could build.

I wrote the brand foundation: positioning, audience, mission, vision, values, personality, tone of voice and value proposition. Not as a paper exercise, but as a working document, the kind anyone joining the project tomorrow can read and act on without guessing. The tagline that is live today came out of it: Nature’s wisdom, bottled by hand.

Fourteen sections, from how the brand sounds to how it sets a page.

The palette, with the rule for how to balance it. A guide is only useful when it says how, not just what.

Then the identity. A closed palette, a type scale, an icon set. A system that repeats, rather than one nice drawing that only works once.

Then the words. I rewrote the home page and the product pages, trading vague promise for ingredient, process and result, which is how this brand sounds when it sounds like itself.

And last the product photography, shot by me, because a brand that describes itself as made by hand cannot show up in stock images.

Four disciplines that usually arrive from four different suppliers. One head, start to finish, and none of them contradicting the others.

What I want to stay with you from this is not the list.

It is that the size of a brand does not decide whether it deserves communication done properly. What decides is the size of what it is trying to do. Alaya makes products that hold up, with formulation behind them, built around the health and the body of the person using them, with the smallest environmental footprint it can manage and a supply chain that favours regional growers and local raw material. That is not a lesser brand. It is a small brand thinking big.

And there is something the beauty industry says often and rarely practises: buying from a small local producer is the most concrete version of sustainable consumption there is. Not a label, not a campaign. It is the distance between the person who makes it and the person who uses it.

If your brand works like that, and you are assembling your communication in pieces with one supplier per piece, your budget is not the problem. What is missing is someone who sees the whole thing.
